“It Is Where We Are” by Andrea Bersaglieri is a collection of small botanical paintings that invites close examination and contemplation, revealing more than just masterful technique. Meticulously rendered in oil and watercolor, these paintings at first blush bring to mind scientific illustrations, but upon closer look it becomes evident that they are much more. Bersaglieri delicately and lovingly elevates lowly “weeds” and other “inconsequential plants” into objects of beauty, mystery and wonder. The paintings of grassy stalks carefully arranged into intertwined bundles were particularly intriguing to me, bringing to mind ancient ritualistic items. She reminds us that this is all around us and easily found, if only we look, and considering what is currently happening to our environment, we should never take them for granted.
Currently on view at Flux Art Space until Nov 30, 2019, check for hours.
